Mystery Booster Commander Edition: What $249.99 Gets You
One box, twenty-four packs, and a price tag that only makes sense if you have a table full of friends to split it with.

According to ICv2, preorders for Mystery Booster: Commander Edition open October 19 through Festival-in-a-Box: Atlanta 2026, a Secret Lair drop, at $249.99. ICv2 also notes the product was previously available only at limited convention events. Wizards of the Coast’s own feature on the set, published in August, says it debuted at Gen Con and will also be sold at MagicCon: Atlanta, November 13 to 15.
Here is what the box holds. It contains 24 boosters of 20 cards each. Per ICv2, every pack has three white, three blue, three black, three red and three green commons or uncommons, plus a reprint of any rarity, a reprinted rare or mythic commander, a new-to-Magic commander, one more card, and a playtest card. Do the math and each pack comes to about $10.42, before counting the extras. Those extras are an Atlanta Secret Gallery foil edition of four cards (Parallax Tide, Regrowth, Viridian Revel and Assassin’s Trophy) and four full-art textless promos (Dance of the Dead, Tana the Bloodsower, Tymna the Weaver and Auspicious Aquarium).
The real draw is the new commanders. Wizards says the set has more than 2,000 cards from Magic’s history and 60 commanders that have never been printed before. It is built for Commander Draft, where eight players split into two four-player games. Split a $249.99 box eight ways and it comes to about $31 a seat for three packs each. That is a fair evening’s entertainment for a playgroup that was going to spend money on Magic anyway. It is a steep buy for one person who just wants the new legends.
There are open questions. The price comes from ICv2, and we have not seen it on a Wizards page. Neither source we read says when the box ships or whether there is a purchase limit. The last Festival-in-a-Box we could check, the Las Vegas 2024 edition, also cost $249.99 and was limited to three per person, according to Star City Games. That tells us nothing certain about this one. One more thing to know before you buy: Wizards lists the set as Commander legal on November 13, with all Eternal formats following on January 1, 2027.
So the question is not whether the cards are interesting. They are. It is whether sixty new commanders are worth ten dollars a pack to your group, and only your group can answer that.
