Magic’s 2027 Calendar Has Six Sets, All Full-Size, and Two Are Still Blank

Six sets. That’s the whole year of Magic: The Gathering in 2027, and if you’ve been trying to budget for the hobby, it’s an easier number to plan around than most years.

Here is the schedule as it’s been reported. Nauctis: The Sunken Realm arrives February 5. Marvel: Darkhold Destiny follows on April 9, and Kamigawa: Titanbreach on June 4. A Universes Beyond set with no name yet is slotted for August 6, then Zhalfir on October 1, and a second unnamed Universes Beyond set closes the year on November 19. Star City Games and MTG Rocks both list the same six dates. The split is even: three sets from Magic’s own multiverse and three Universes Beyond.

The part that matters for your wallet is the size. Head designer Mark Rosewater answered a fan question about 2027 with a short line: “They will all be full-size,” as MTG Rocks reported in July. So there are no small supplemental sets tucked between the big ones. Fewer releases means fewer dates to chase and fewer reasons to feel like your collection is already out of date. It also means each set carries more weight, and a weak one has nowhere to hide.

What do we actually know about the sets? Nauctis is an undersea plane of merfolk with warring kingdoms and sunken horrors, according to Star City Games. Kamigawa: Titanbreach drops giant monsters from Ikoria into Kamigawa once the Omenpaths open, so expect mechs fighting monsters. Zhalfir goes back to a plane lit by five suns and tied to a spirit realm, with Teferi Akosa returning as a key character. MTG Rocks adds that Darkhold Destiny is the first Universes Beyond set to tell its own story, with new characters and a companion comic. It also reports that each of the 2027 multiverse sets will ship with four preconstructed decks, a detail that came out of the preview panel at MagicCon: Amsterdam. The number of Universes Beyond decks isn’t known yet.

Now the caveats. Wizards’ own news page lists the four named sets under “Coming Soon” but doesn’t show release dates, so the dates above come from the coverage, not from the page we checked. Prices for 2027 products haven’t been announced. And the two blank Universes Beyond slots could be anything. If you’ve been burned by a licensed set that wasn’t aimed at players who just want to play, those are the dates to watch.

Even so, a year where the biggest question is which two licenses show up is a calmer year than most. If you’re a Commander player with a limited budget, the practical move is to pick the sets you actually want and ignore the rest. With six full-size releases, that’s a real option.
