Week in Review: Announcements Without Prices
This week the news came with numbers where they were easy and blanks where they mattered. SPIEL Essen gave us a record crowd. Two other announcements gave us boxes and paints, and no prices.
From the show floor
SPIEL Essen Sold Out All Four Days, and the Hall Floor Is the Limit: The fair ran October 22 to 25 and drew 230,000 people, up from 220,000 in 2025. The organizers say a relocation is not on the table, and six thefts were reported to them during setup and teardown.
Announced, but not priced
Two Horus Heresy Battle Group Boxes Are Coming, but There’s No Price Yet: The Vanguard Assault and Heavy Assault boxes were revealed on November 2. Pre-orders open “soon,” with no price and no release date.
Army Painter’s D&D Paints Arrive in 2027, With a Free Paint Academy First: The paint range is called Forgotten Pigments. The free D&D Paint Academy tutorials are the part you can use now, while price, paint count and release month are still unannounced.
Where the games came from
The D&D Expert Set Is the Half of B/X Everyone Forgets: The 1981 Expert Set covers levels 4 through 14. Retro-clones such as Labyrinth Lord and Old-School Essentials copied it along with the Basic Set.
The Spartan Tank Started as a 1989 Magazine Conversion Project: White Dwarf issue 119 showed readers how to build one from a Land Raider kit. It became a plastic Horus Heresy kit in 2022 and a Legions Imperialis squadron of four.
Coming up
The Army Painter paints are due sometime in 2027, and the articles give no month. SPIEL Essen returns October 21 to 24, 2027. The Horus Heresy boxes have no date beyond “soon,” and we will report the price when Games Workshop names one.
