Army Painter’s D&D Paints Arrive in 2027, With a Free Paint Academy First

Most Dungeons & Dragons tables own more miniatures than they have ever painted. The grey plastic sits in the box, and the dwarf fighter stays a dwarf fighter in primer.

The Army Painter and D&D are betting they can change that. In a post dated October 27, The Army Painter announced a partnership with Dungeons & Dragons, revealed at SPIEL Essen. The centerpiece is a paint collection called Forgotten Pigments, due in 2027. The company says it features colors developed specifically for D&D and inspired by the game’s artwork, books, characters, creatures and worlds. Bell of Lost Souls picked up the news as well.

The part you can use right now is the other half of the announcement. Alongside the paints, The Army Painter is launching a free D&D Paint Academy, with tutorials meant to take a player “from their first brushstroke to more advanced techniques.” You can sign up on the company’s site to hear about new colors and product reveals first. A free teaching program ahead of a product is a sensible order of operations, because the person who has never held a brush is the one who needs the most help.

Here is what we can’t tell you. The announcement says outright that the details are being kept under wraps “for now.” We have no price, no count of paints, no word on whether Forgotten Pigments arrives as single pots, themed sets or both, and no month inside 2027. Anyone quoting a figure at this point is guessing.

There is also a fair question about what this changes. The Army Painter already sells a D&D-branded line, Nolzur’s Marvelous Pigments, in themed sets such as Adventurers, Undead, Underdark and Monsters. The new announcement doesn’t mention that line, so we don’t know whether Forgotten Pigments replaces it, sits beside it, or fills in the colors those sets never covered. If you own the old sets, hold off on restocking until that gets answered.

Catching up on two other stories while we’re here. On the Tomb Kings Host of Nehekhara set we covered earlier, a second source now backs up the price we couldn’t confirm: Miniature Market lists the 78-model set at $227.50, with a preorder price of $193.99 shown today. Its page gives conflicting release information, so don’t plan around a date yet. On the PSA graded-card theft, we looked again and found no reporting newer than what we ran: no arrests and no recovered cards.

If you want a head start before 2027, the existing D&D range is still on sale, including The Army Painter Dungeons and Dragons Adventurer’s Paint Set. It is a reasonable first purchase for a party’s worth of heroes.

This story isn’t finished. The price, paint count and release month are all still missing, and we’ll check The Army Painter’s site for them and report back when they appear.
