Compact comics — a publishing format that debuted around 2023 — are shaping up as an inexpensive, new-reader-friendly gift option this holiday season. These complete single-story paperbacks are pocket-sized at 5.5″ x 8.5″ and priced well below standard graphic novel collections.
DC Comics leads the format with its Compact Comics line at $9.99 each, including upcoming releases like “Swamp Thing: The Anatomy Lesson” and “Batman: Harley and Ivy” (October 6), “Crisis on Infinite Earths” (November 3), and “Mister Miracle” and “Justice League: Origin” (December 1). DC is also offering a $49.99 box set bundling six titles, including “All-Star Superman,” “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns,” and “Watchmen.”
Marvel’s Premier Editions run $14.99 and include “X-Men: Yesterday’s X-Men” (October 6) and “Death of Captain America” (November 3). Other publishers have joined the format too: Oni Press ($9.99) is releasing compact editions of “Adventure Time,” “Rick and Morty,” and “Archie,” BOOM! Studios ($14.99) has “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” Vault Comics ($14.99–$19.99) offers “Vampire: The Masquerade,” “The Plot,” and “Barbaric,” and Dynamite Entertainment ($9.99) is publishing “Red Sonja” and “Vampirella Masters” in the format.
